This Wednesday, July 23, the 2025 MLS All-Star Game will take place—a highly anticipated clash between the top stars of Major League Soccer and Liga MX. Big names like Chucky Lozano, Sergio Canales, Jordi Alba, and Lionel Messi are all expected to take part.

However, one of the biggest headlines leading up to the match was the uncertainty surrounding Sergio Ramos’ participation. Just hours later, those doubts were put to rest.

Mikel Arriola, president of Liga MX, officially confirmed that the legendary Spanish defender will indeed be part of the All-Star roster facing Messi and company.

“The captain of Liga MX for tomorrow’s All-Star Game against MLS in Austin will be the legendary Sergio Ramos,” Arriola announced on X.

Why was Ramos’ status in doubt for the All-Star Game?

Just over 24 hours before the event, Sergio Ramos was seen training with Rayados, while most of the Liga MX All-Stars had already traveled to Texas. His teammate Sergio Canales, by contrast, had already arrived in Austin and even took part in the Skills Challenge.

Liga MX confirms key player absences

Cruz Azul confirmed three notable absences for the All-Star Game. Of the six players originally called up—Kevin Mier, Willer Ditta, Erik Lira, Ángel Sepúlveda, Ignacio Rivero, and Rodolfo Rotondi—only half will participate.

Rivero was ruled out due to a rib injury, while Lira and Rotondi will remain with the team by decision of head coach Nicolás Larcamón. Sepúlveda was called up as a late addition and will be present at Q2 Stadium.
