Christian Pulisic has been one of Milan’s brightest lights in what has been a gloomy season. But despite being one of the club’s few consistent performers, his future at San Siro is now suddenly uncertain. What began as a straightforward contract renewal has evolved into a potential transfer saga, with the player reportedly being offered to other clubs in Italy and abroad. Amid all this, fans are left wondering how a season that should have cemented Pulisic’s long-term future at Milan has instead opened the door to a possible shock departure.

The 2024-25 campaign has been nothing short of disastrous for the Rossoneir. Sitting in ninth place with just one Serie A match remaining, the team is certain to miss out on European soccer altogether next season. Their early exit in the Champions League playoff round to Feyenoord, combined with a Coppa Italia final defeat to Bologna, has left supporters frustrated and the club’s management under pressure.

A disappointing 3-1 loss to Roma last weekend further dented any remaining hopes of European qualification, and unless teams above them falter in the final round, Milan will be watching the continental competitions from home next year.

Amid the chaos, Christian Pulisic has flourished. The American winger has tallied 17 goals and 12 assists in 49 appearances, making him Milan’s leading scorer this season. His performances have not only won over fans but also the front office, who began working months ago to extend his contract — which currently runs until 2027, with an option for 2028.

MilanNews reports that Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani proposed a new deal back in March, offering Pulisic a renewal until 2029 with a salary increase to $5.6 million per season. The club sees him as a leader, both on and off the pitch. The upcoming match against Monza on May 24 will mark the American’s 100th appearance in a red and black shirt — a milestone that only underlines his rapid integration into the team.

Why the reported change of heart?

But then came the unexpected twist. While negotiations had nearly reached the finish line, Pulisic reportedly paused everything, asking for time to “understand the club’s direction.” The reason? Doubts about the club’s sporting project.

“Then at a certain point, Pulisic asked and took time because he wanted to understand Milan’s sporting project between the sporting director and the coach. He wants to have guarantees for the future,” said Relevo’s journalist Matteo Moretto, speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel. “Pulisic’s agent is moving a lot. He proposed the boy both in Italy and abroad.”

This sudden change in attitude from the player’s camp has alarmed Milan. While the club believed they were on the verge of securing their star’s future, Pulisic’s decision to pause talks and consider outside interest marks a serious turn in negotiations.

According to sources like Calciomercato and Sky Italia, the situation is not motivated by money but by uncertainty over Milan’s long-term sporting vision, including the identity of the next coach and sporting director. With Sergio Conceicao’s job in jeopardy and management in flux, the lack of clarity appears to have unsettled the 26-year-old, a player who reportedly prioritizes Champions League action and high-level ambitions.
