As Manchester United prepare for a potentially season-defining Europa League quarter-final clash with Lyon at Old Trafford, a major piece of their campaign puzzle has been abruptly removed. Manager Ruben Amorim confirmed almost 24 hours before the match that one of his most utilized players this season is now ruled out until next term. It’s a crushing development, made even worse given United’s thin margin for error domestically and in Europe.
In contrast, across the English soccer landscape, Marcus Rashford continues to light up the Champions League, driving Aston Villa close to an iconic comeback in Paris. While Rashford may not have scored, his dynamic display at the Parc des Princes added fresh urgency to the debate about his future.
But back in Manchester, the real headline was the confirmation that striker Joshua Zirkzee will miss the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury.
Zirkzee’s season ends in silence: What did Amorim say?
Only introduced in the second half of last summer under Amorim’s predecessor Erik ten Hag, Zirkzee has featured in 31 of Amorim’s 32 matches, playing a vital if often understated role. Despite netting just three Premier League goals, the 23-year-old has been involved in several key moments—including a goal in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon, which briefly gave United the lead.
The Dutchman’s progress has been steady rather than spectacular. However, Amorim’s words made clear how much he valued the young Dutchman’s evolution. “Joshua is out for the season,” the Portuguese manager said solemnly in his pre-match press conference.
“He will not play more this season. Let’s prepare him for the next one. It’s tough, especially in this moment. I think he’s improving in all aspects of the game, so it’s hard for any player to stop, but this is football, and he has to be ready now to recover.”
The former Bayern Munich man sustained the injury during the Red Devils’ 4-1 loss at Newcastle, a game in which much went wrong for Amorim’s side. While Rasmus Hojlund may now get more minutes in Zirkzee’s absence, the Danish striker is reportedly under scrutiny and could be sold this summer.

Rashford’s spark with Aston Villa only rubs salt in the wound
While United struggles for rhythm, Marcus Rashford is reminding Europe of his class with Aston Villa. On loan at the Midlands club, Rashford didn’t score against Paris Saint-Germain but left his fingerprints all over the match.

He completed the most dribbles (four), had the most touches inside the opposition box (12), and created four chances. No player delivered more crosses than him either (nine), as per the BBC.
With an option to buy priced at $53 million, Villa must now weigh up whether the Englishman’s potential can be unlocked permanently at Villa Park, or if his firepower might be needed again at Old Trafford next season.
