Marco Reus was stretchered off of the field during Borussia Dortmund‘s derby with Schalke.  The veteran Germany international appeared to suffer a serious ankle injury inside the first half after being tackled by a Schalke defender.  Reus was emotionally distraught and covering his face with his hands as he was carried off the pitch.

The Revierderby on Saturday was the German’s 250th Bundesliga appearance for his hometown team.  Prior to the match, Reus spoke about how much the milestone meant to him.

“It was always a dream to play for this club, whose fans I feel connected to,” stated Reus.  “It’s so much fun to play in our stadium and especially to celebrate a win with the fans.  For me, it’s the fulfilment of a childhood dream.”

Marco Reus suffers serious injury in another setback

Injury issues have unfortunately plagued Reus throughout his career, particularly for his Germany national team.  In fact, Reus has missed over 70 matches for his country due to injury.  The 33-year-old German even mentioned these problems before the Schalke game.

“Of course I had to accept a lot of setbacks, but I couldn’t just say: ‘All right, now I’m injured again, then I’ll stop!’  It’s not that the injuries mean that I no longer have the incentive to practice the sport that I love so much and that gives me so much joy every day,” claimed Reus.

“In this respect, it’s actually quite simple: You have to motivate yourself.  Patience is required.  You have to say to yourself: ‘Okay, that’s the way it is now, you’ll deal with it too.’  There are far worse things in the world.  That’s why injuries are really small things for me.”

It remains to be seen how serious Reus’ latest injury is, but his World Cup hopes could be under threat.  The star midfielder has previously missed out on the 2014 World Cup and both the 2016 and 2020 Euros due to various injuries.  Fans in Germany, and around the world, will be hoping for Reus to play in the upcoming World Cup.
