Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder scored in the 88th minute to break the hearts of Mexico supporters, and to send the game to a thrilling finish before Rafa Marquez tripped Arjen Robben in the box, resulting in a penalty for the Dutch. Klaas Jan Huntelaar then struck the ball into the corner of the net, to win the match 2-1 and send Netherlands to the quarter-finals of the competition.
The late surge by Netherlands was a cruel blow for Mexico. El Tri were the better team for most of the match, with the Netherlands playing a more conservative and negative game, while it was Mexico that continued to push forward to try to win the match.
