Poland, Portugal face UEFA disciplinary probes

Paris (AFP) – Poland and Portugal’s football authorities became the latest to come under scrutiny from UEFA as European football’s governing body opened disciplinary proceedings against both federations on Friday.

Portugal progressed to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 with a 5-3 penalty shootout win in Marseille after the teams were tied at 1-1 after extra-time.

The Polish Football Federation (PZPN) face sanctions for the setting off of fireworks, crowd disturbances and a delay to kick-off.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) could also be punished for the setting off of fireworks and field invasions by supporters as one fan ran towards superstar Cristiano Ronaldo after entering the pitch in extra-time.

The FPF had already been cited by UEFA when a fan ran onto the field to take a picture with Ronaldo at the end of their 0-0 draw with Austria on June 18th.

Both cases will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 21 July.

Federations from Hungary, Belgium, Albania, Romania, England, Russia, Croatia and Turkey have all faced varying degrees of sanctions from UEFA during a tournament often disrupted by fan troubles.
