West Ham were beaten 1-0 by title-chasing Chelsea on Wednesday after Eden Hazard’s first half goal settled matters at Upton Park.
Here are our player ratings from the game (from a rating of 0 to 10):
West Ham United
Adrian – 7/10
Could do nothing about Hazard’s goal but he did make a good stop from Ramires to keep his side in the game.
Carl Jenkinson – 7/10
Prevented Costa from doubling Chelsea’s lead by making a last-gasp interception. A good game for the Arsenal loanee overall.
Wiston Reid – N/A
Got injured early on and was replaced by James Collins in the eight minute.
James Tomkins – 6/10
Anytime Chelsea attacked, Tomkins didn’t look comfortable but he managed to make some important challenges.
Aaron Cresswell – 8/10
Fantastic performance on the left flank by Cresswell. He gave the Hammers a viable attacking option on the left but didn’t neglect his defensive duties regardless. Made a late block to deny Willian.
Stewart Downing – 7/10
Didn’t get into the game quickly enough but improved in the second half and caused Chelsea problems on the left flank.
Cheikhou Kouyate – 6/10
Denied by Courtois in the 17th minute but didn’t offer much else throughout the game.
Kevin Nolan – 6/10
Made a physical impression, nothing more.
Mark Noble – 7/10
Noble was the man who pulled the strings in midfield and made life uncomfortable for the visitor’s creative players
Diafra Sakho – 7/10
A constant threat to the Blues’ defense and was only denied by some brilliant goalkeeping from Courtois.
Enner Valencia – 6/10
Found it difficult to get in behind the Chelsea defense but displayed some great movement and trickery on occasion.
James Collins – 6/10
Replaced the injured Winston Reid early on and put in a good shift in his absence.
Nene – N/A
Came on for Kouyate in the 87th minute but didn’t do anything worthy of note.
Thibaut Courtois – 9/10
The Belgian goalkeeper was in superb form as he made a hosts of saves particularly from Sakho to preserve his team’s lead. Man of the match.
Branislav Ivanovic – 6/10
Joined the attack as often as he could but struggled defensively particularly in the second half.
John Terry – 8/10
Was a calming influence at the heart of the defense and led his side to another clean sheet, Chelsea’s 100th under Mourinho.
Gary Cahill – 6/10
Failed to track Sakho’s movement in the box but made a few last-ditch blocks.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 7/10
Showed no desire to join the attack unlike Ivanovic but did a better defensive job than his compatriot.
Kurt Zouma – 7/10
Did a professional job in an unfamiliar role but was often overrun in the midfield.
Ramires – 8/10
One of Chelsea’s best players on the night. Ramires exhibited great energy and was everywhere on the pitch. Delivered the cross that led to Hazard’s goal and could have gotten on the scoresheet himself but was denied by Adrian in the Hammers’ goal.
Cesc Fabregas – 6/10
Not his best performance in a Chelsea shirt and often gave the ball away cheaply in the second period.
Oscar – 6/10
Was involved in some beautiful attacking moves early on but faded away as the game progressed. Was replaced by Willian in the 74th minute.
Eden Hazard – 8/10
Scored the match winning goal for Chelsea and troubled the West Ham defense from time to time. Carved out some really good opportunities for his teammates but they were wasted.
Diego Costa – 6/10
Missed two good chances in the first half and was isolated for most of the second period.
Willian – 5/10
Missed a good chance late on that would have sealed the win for Chelsea.
Didier Drogba – N/A
Replaced Costa in stoppage time and got booked.
Loic Remy – N/A
Didn’t see enough of the ball to make an impact.
