Manchester United will complete the signing of Barcelona forward Pedro on Tuesday, following the conclusion of the Spanish Super Cup.
The 28-year-old will say his farewells and depart for England shortly after the completion of the second leg of the competition, which Barcelona trail 4-0 to Athletic Bilbao.
United had been attempting to lure Pedro away from the Camp Nou since early July, but were stonewalled by Barcelona – as well as the player. Louis van Gaal wanted the Spain international in his squad for the Premier League opener against Tottenham. However, Barcelona won the battle to delay the forward’s move to Old Trafford until the conclusion of the Spanish Super Cup.
It is understood that United and Barcelona have agreed to terms on the transfer, but the deal remained ‘on hold’ until Pedro signed off on the move.
During his pre-match press conference on Friday, Van Gaal hinted that United were waiting on the veteran Barcelona player to finalize the deal.
Asked if he was optimistic of completing the transfer, the manager responded: “You have to ask Pedro, not me. My answer is it’s a process, it’s a club, it’s a player, and we are there also.
“I don’t mention anything until he has signed. When he has signed I come to you and say ‘hey, Pedro is here’. That is still not the case. We shall wait and see.”
Barcelona have been resigned to losing Pedro since manager Luis Enrique cannot guarantee the Spain international his desired playing time with the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar being his first-choice forwards.
After scoring the match-winning goal and securing Barcelona’s 5-4 extra-time victory in the UEFA Super Cup, Pedro informed the media that he did not want to leave Barcelona. However, the lack of continuity in the squad has forced him to rethink his future in Catalonia.
Asked if he wanted to go or not, the winger said: “The answer is no, but it’s complicated for many things.
“It’s not money, as has been said – which is another lack of respect. It’s a question of continuity, of minutes. I’m an ambitious player. Stay or go, I will always be of this team.”
In the past few days, a story emanating from England claimed that Pedro was reconsidering his move to Manchester United over fears of Louis van Gaal’s managerial style, following the Dutch boss’ treatment of David de Gea and Victor Valdes. However, that report has been dismissed as pure speculation.
Van Gaal has all-but guaranteed Pedro a starting role alongside Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay in United’s starting eleven, and news of the player’s imminent arrival in Manchester has been greeted with unanimous support by the players and coaching staff at Old Trafford.
Pedro has been lauded for his professionalism and work ethic. Despite the transfer speculation which has followed him for the past few months, the winger has continued to produce solid performances when he has been called on by Luis Enrique.
Regardless of the result during Monday’s second leg of the Spanish Super Cup, the match at the Camp Nou will be an emotional event as La Blaugrana’s supporters will say their final farewell to one of the most beloved players in the history of the great Catalan club.
