Italy 2 - 0 Georgia Highlights

Thank you Mr. De Rossi for your two goals against Hector Cuper’s Georgia and what goals they were.  With a cannon shot in the 16th minute, coming from over 25 yards out, Daniele De Rossi would provide Italy the match winner.  No chance for the Georgian keeper as De Rossi’s kick from straight out was rising and curved into the upper right-hand corner.

De Rossi went on to add a second goal in the final moments closing this one down for the Azzurri.  Aquilani went close on two occasions of his own and the big difference for the Azzurri was the forced switch to a Roma midfield (exception Pirlo).  It was a breath of fresh air with De Rossi and Alberto Aquilani on at the same time now if Lippi would only add Simone Perrotta to that mix.  For too long have Azzurri coaching stuck to the favored AC Milan midfield of Pirlo, Gattuso etc.  If it takes a Gattuso injury to see the light so be it.  Love the emotion and commitment of Gennaro Gattuso but the man can’t play the total 90 anymore.

Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie would make the starting XI after surviving a late injury scare. Legrottaglie played the entire 90 minutes while Andrea Pirlo, Antonio Di Natale and Luca Toni all made way for second half substitutes.  The back four were still finding their places in this one and Georgian midfielder Levan Kenia really should’ve levelled 1 – 1 but he stumbled when he had a chance to tap in from six yards out.

Italy kits at the Euros: A retrospective

Italy kits at the Euros: A retrospective

Five brands have represented the Italian national team for their kits at the Euros in recent decades. Incontestably, the German sportswear company Puma takes the lead, having sponsored Italy from 2004 to 2020. Nevertheless, each kit the Italians have worn since Euro 1996 is worth examining. Significantly, the design and tailoring of each jersey have […]

Luciano Spalletti: Italy's problems and how he may fix them

Last month, the Italian Football Federation confirmed that Luciano Spalletti will be taking over as the new Italy coach. Roberto Mancini, who had been manager for five years, resigned and was replaced by the former Napoli boss. The 64-year-old has a lengthy club management resume that includes stints as manager of Roma and Inter and […]

Italy Out of 2012 Olympics

Italy Out of 2012 Olympics

One Italian national team played a match yesterday, and the results were quite dispiriting.  With a seemingly safe 2-0 aggregate lead over Belarus, the Italian U-21 club found a way to lose 3-1 in the return match and be eliminated from the UEFA U-21 championship.  The practical result is that the club not only will […]

Why You Should Watch the Euro 2012 Qualifier on Friday

As the new Serie A season pauses this weekend for national teams to begin their qualifying for Euro 2012, Italian soccer fans may feel lost not being able to watch their favorite club.  To be honest, the Italy-Estonia qualifier looks less than tantalizing only two months after the exciting World Cup match-ups and high-level play.  […]
