Jeremy Mathieu admitted the international break affected Barcelona’s performance following his side’s narrow 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo.
The French defender made it two goals in two games when he headed home a free-kick from Xavi Hernandez in the 73rd minute to give Barcelona the advantage they needed to slip by mid-table Celta.
Prior to his goal against Real Madrid in El Clasico, Mathieu had failed to score in his first nineteen league games since his some move from Valencia.
While the 31-year-old maintained his goalscoring form against Celta, the defender believes the international break temporarily slowed the momentum his teammates had built in previous weeks.
“It was a tough game,” Mathieu said following the match. “After the international break, it’s always more difficult because the dynamics always drop a bit.
“Celta were better in the first half and in the second we profited from a free-kick. Sometimes you win and by small details.
“Sometimes games are won by suffering. Bar have suffered this year but the most important thing is the three points.
“The two goals, against Real Madrid and tonight against Celta, are as important as each other. The three points count the same.”
Mathieu also highlighted the importance of Gerard Pique’s recent performances. After starting off the season slowly, Pique has been in outstanding form since returning from the winter break.
The 28-year-old defender nullified numerous Celta attacks with well-timed challenges and interceptions, and his efforts didn’t go unnoticed by his centre-back partner.
“Gerard is at a very high level, to play by his side is incredible,” Mathieu added.
Sunday’s victory restored Barcelona’s four-point lead over Real Madrid, and perhaps more importantly crossed one more game off the La Liga schedule.
“We have the same difference between us and second place, but with a game less to play” Mathieu concluded.
Madrid still have important matches remaining against Sevilla (away) and Valencia (home). However, with Barcelona still to face Sevilla (away), Valencia (home) and Atletico Madrid (away), the La Liga title may not be determined until the final day of the season.
