Luka Modric’s Milan journey has recently begun, and while his debut last weekend didn’t start under the bright lights of the opening whistle, it still carried a moment that sent waves through both the stands and social media. Even though he is now representing Christian Pulisic and Santiago Gimenez‘s team, he maintains a moving pre-match routine, one that is as personal as it is enduring.

The 39-year-old Croatian maestro made his first appearance in Rossoneri colors in a high-profile friendly against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Premier League club ultimately ran out 4-1 winners, but for many Rossoneri supporters, the final score wasn’t the headline. Instead, it was about seeing their new signing’s composure, vision, and signature moments on and off the pitch.

Massimiliano Allegri opted not to start the Croatian veteran, instead introducing him in the second half as a replacement for Samuele Ricci. From the moment he stepped onto the pitch, the Croatian’s qualities were evident. His calm control of possession, sharp passing, and ability to find space for teammates immediately changed the tempo of Milan’s play.

But the most talked-about moment happened before a single competitive ball was kicked in anger for his new club — something that has followed him for years across borders and competitions.

The ritual that speaks volumes

As Milan later shared on its official social media channels, Modric took a moment during his warm-up to perform a familiar and deeply personal act: kissing a shin pad adorned with images of his loved ones.

“The Blazers’ captain kissed the shin guards on which were pictures of his wife and children, and the pictures also include Jesus and the Virgin Mary,” reported Croatian outlet Vecernji list.

This ritual, which began during his time at Real Madrid, has become a quiet yet powerful reminder of what drives him every time he steps onto the pitch — his family, faith, and personal journey. It’s not a superstition for luck, but a heartfelt connection to the people and values that define him.
