It’s been a relatively quiet few days in terms of Premier League news (understandably so given the focus on international friendlies and World Cup qualifying matches), but here are several stories I picked that you may be interested in reading. - English Premier League Coverage Is Ten Times More Popular Than Any Other Content (IPTV News). Hong Kong’s Now TV has almost one million subscribers to its IPTV product. And according to an executive at Now TV’s owners PCCW, the Premier League games are ten times more popular than any other content. Plus, they show every single game.
- McCarthy’s No Genius, So How Come Wolves Are Going Up? (Championship Talk). There are still several weeks to go in the season, but it looks likely that Wolverhampton Wanderers will return to the Premier League next season. Writer Dan Trelfer examines the secret to manager Mick McCarthy’s success.
- 2009 Premier League Unsung Heroes XI (Soccerlens). Liverpudlian Neil Jones puts together an all-star Premier League team made up of eleven unsung heroes. The only pick I disagree with is Ashley Young, not because he isn’t a hero but because I feel he’s a lot more established and is by no means unsung. Everyone has been singing his praises for the past couple of seasons. Take a look at the list and see who you think should have been on it.
- KSC Fans Take A Walk On The Wild Side (Bundesliga Talk). Read this interesting account by Joe Ashmore of how German police recently used heavyhanded tactics against Karlsruhe supporters, and how Karlsruhe fans reacted.
- El Salvador 2-2 USA: CONCACAF Personified (Major League Soccer Talk). Kartik Krishnaiyer dissects the United States’ performance from this past weekend’s World Cup qualifying match. The comments left by readers range from disgust at the USA’s tactics to appreciation of what a cauldron the stadium in San Salvador was.
- England’s Movement Bodes Well (The Guardian). Who would have thought that Steven Gerrard’s plum position for England was on the left wing? Fabio Capello may have finally found how to combine the wonderful talents of Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney — with help from Ashley Cole — to create an explosive left-sided attack where England have always been culprit. David Pleat explores.
- A Few Highlights From This Weekend’s International Matches (World Cup Blog). I don’t know about you, but I had good intentions of watching a ton of football this past weekend, but I missed out on many of the matches (other than seeing Wales succumb to defeat against Finland, and England master their game versus Slovakia). Thankfully, Laurie over at the World Cup Blog has picked some of the best highlights you (and I) may have missed from this past weekend.
