Diego Could Be The Signing Of The Summer If He Lives Up To His Potential.
Steve McClaren’s new-look Wolfsburg side are now equipped with a weapon of mass destruction in the form of Brazilian playmaker Diego. The additions of Simon Kjaer, Arne Friedrich, Caiuby, Cicero, and Mario Mandzukic are all well and good. They’ll fight for a first-team place and look to impress their new manager, and hey’ll be effective players if nothing else. Diego doesn’t fit into that category, though. Diego is, as they say, absolute class.
Wolfsburg opened their season against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and were unlucky not to leave Bavaria with a point. What was interesting about that match, though, was the effect Zvjezdan Misimovic had. His movement and passing ability was a clear threat to Bayern Munich’s backline, and if he had just a tad less desire to beat every Bayern Munich player on the pitch before scoring, Wolfsburg may have won that game.
McClaren and Misimovic already seem to have come to a bit of a stand-off. Misimovic revealed his disappointment at being left out of the first-team, and has been looking like moving away from Die Wolfe all summer in fairness. Well, McClaren has just solved that problem with the signing of Diego from Juventus. A front three of Dzeko and Grafite with Diego sitting in behind them could be absolutely lethal this season.
Diego’s Italian escapades were nothing to write home about, but a team like Juventus had so many problems the last few seasons that it’s no real surprise that Diego failed to settle in. Diego’s last stint in Germany was a hugely successful one, and McClaren will be hoping the young Brazilian will be able to replicate that success with Wolfsburg.
This is a massive signing for Die Wolfe and McClaren. He really could be the difference between a top three spot and a spot in the Europa League. When McClaren took charge of Wolfsburg in the summer, he announced his intentions to lead Wolfsburg back to the top of the pack at first asking. His signings this summer have made his intentions clear. Diego has joined Wolfsburg from Juventus for an estimated fee of 15 million Euros.
