Cristiano Ronaldo has finally put to rest months of speculation regarding his next move. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who had the chance to join other clubs for a shot at the FIFA Club World Cup, has now made a decisive call about his club future — and it’s not the one many expected.

The legendary Portuguese forward is set to extend his stay at Al-Nassr, despite not securing any major titles since his high-profile arrival in January 2023. According to Fabrizio Romano, Ronaldo has reached an agreement to renew his contract, with only the exact duration yet to be finalized. One year is guaranteed, but Saudi officials are hoping to tie him down until 2027, a commitment that could take him well into his 43rd year.

“Cristiano Ronaldo will remain at Al-Nassr,” Romano wrote. “The deal is set to be signed soon, with final details being worked out.”

This development arrives despite mounting rumors that Ronaldo was eyeing a departure, especially following a cryptic social media post in early June that read, “This chapter is over,” shortly after Al-Nassr finished third in the Saudi Pro League.

Turning down the Club World Cup

Adding intrigue to the situation, Ronaldo confirmed he had turned down multiple offers from clubs competing at the Club World Cup. While many assumed this indicated a move away from Saudi Arabia, the veteran forward clarified his stance after Portugal’s UEFA Nations League triumph over Spain.

“Nothing will change,” he said when asked about his future. “Yes,” was his simple reply when pressed on whether he would stay with Al-Nassr, via ESPN.

His choice to reject Club World Cup participation and commit to Al-Nassr comes at a pivotal time for Saudi soccer. With the TV rights cycle approaching its end, the league is in desperate need of icons like Ronaldo to retain global relevance and commercial value.
