While Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is normally tight-lipped on potential incoming transfers — most notably when he claimed to have never heard of Santi Cazorla only days before signing him from Malaga in 2012 — the Frenchman has recently claimed that he will do his best to make signings as quickly as possible during the upcoming transfer period.
“Yes, we are short and the number of games we have to play in January are very important,” Wenger told BeIN Sport. “God knows how we will come out of the Christmas period, with a lot of demand on the physical front so we need to do something. I would love to give you some names, downstairs on the bar with a coffee but not in front of your camera.”
Wenger’s admission that the north London club “need to do something” in the January transfer window is certainly a big acknowledgment. And his statements will surely make Gunner fans happy.
With Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Danny Welbeck all currently sidelined, and the majority of the sextet being long-term injuries, the Gunners are certainly lacking depth. Yet despite the injury issues, Arsenal are among the favorites to collect the Premier League title at the end of the season.
As Chelsea and Manchester United, winners of nine out of the last 11 Premier League titles, continue to struggle, this year’s title race is wide open. If Arsenal can strengthen their side ahead of the season’s second half, Arsenal could give themselves their best shot at winning the title since their undefeated season in 2003-04.
While the Gunners are short in numbers due to injuries, I personally suspect that Wenger will go for quality rather than quantity. ith Coquelin, their standout defensive midfielder, out until at least February, Arsenal should definitely look to bring in a top player in that position. Wenger has been deploying Mathieu Flamini in the spot just in front of the back four ever since Coquelin suffered his knee injury; however, the 31-year-old is past his prime and will almost certainly be leaving north London when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Adrien Rabiot has been heavily linked with a switch to the Gunners, but there have been conflicting reports on whether the young Frenchman will leave PSG in January. Italian giants Juventus are also said to be interested in Rabiot, as well.
Wenger could also bring in a young forward into the fold. Breel Embolo and Michy Batshuayi are possibilities, with the latter being an ideal candidate to relieve the in-form Olivier Giroud when needed. Batshuayi would potentially cost more than Embolo, but the Belgian has already netted 14 total goals this season for Marseille.
The January transfer period is a massive opportunity for Wenger to add quality to his team and help give the Gunners more depth where it is needed. A few quality buys next month and Arsenal could be hoisting the Premier League title come May.
