Ángel Correa has quickly become one of the most high-profile signings in this summer’s Liga MX transfer window. The 2022 World Cup champion officially joined Tigres UANL and made his long-awaited debut over the weekend. Now, the Argentine forward is already working behind the scenes to bring a familiar face with him to Mexico.

According to Correa, he’s trying to convince his longtime Atlético Madrid teammate, José María Giménez, to make the jump to Liga MX. The 30-year-old Uruguayan center-back has spent 12 seasons with Atlético and shared many battles alongside Correa during their time in Madrid.

I told Giménez he had to come with me to Tigres, to live this experience,” Correa revealed in an interview with Pello Maldonado. “He told me he’d think about it and talk to his family. Let’s see if we’re lucky enough to convince him next year.”

Giménez is currently under contract with Atlético Madrid until June 2028. According to Transfermarkt, his market value stands at €20 million. Throughout his time at the club, he has made 357 appearances, scored 13 goals, and provided 12 assists under the management of Diego Simeone.

Ángel Correa’s debut with Tigres UANL

Wearing the iconic No. 7 jersey once worn by Tigres legend Gerónimo Barbadillo, Ángel Correa made his official debut for Tigres UANL. Head coach Guido Pizarro deemed him fit and ready, giving him the start in his very first match in Mexico.

Statistically, Correa ended the game with 31 touches, completing 13 of 19 passes. He attempted two dribbles (unsuccessfully), won just two of eight duels, lost possession 13 times, and committed two fouls—but he still managed to find a chance to score.

“Ángel deserves recognition. We’ve only had a few days together here, and he showed he was eager to play. He did well,” Pizarro said following the match.
