Bucharest (AFP) – Romania appointed their first foreign coach in the form of experienced Christoph Daum on Thursday, replacing the sacked Anghel Iordanescu after he failed to get them past the group stages of Euro 2016.
The 62-year-old German has coached clubs in Germany, Belgium, Austria and Turkey in a managerial career spanning four decades.
His last club was Bursaspor, in Turkey, from 2013 to 2014.
“I am extremely motivated and ready to give the best of myself to ensure the success of the national team,” Daum said in a statement on the Romanian football federation (FRF) website announcing his arrival.
But Daum’s appointment was overshadowed by a threatened legal challenge by seven members of the FRF’s executive committee who boycotted the meeting that picked Daum, the news agency Mediafax said.
They are unhappy about the involvement in the voting of Auras Brasoveanu because of his conviction for illegal financing of the second division club of which he was the coach.
Daum won the Bundesliga with Stuttgart in 1992, the Turkish league with Besiktas in 1995 and with Fenerbahce in 2004 and 2005, and the Austrian championship with Austria Vienna in 2003.
