The two biggest clubs in Spanish soccer face off once again in one of the most anticipated soccer matches on the planet.

Barcelona are top of the league and could go four points clear with a victory while Real Madrid are in second place and would overthrow their rivals if they manage a win.

The Catalans are the favorites coming into this match having won their last six matches in all competitions while Madrid have been in poor form for most of 2015 and are very vulnerable at the moment.

The Los Blancos beat Levante 2-0 in their last league game to end a run of three matches without a win but it appears they haven’t fully recovered from the 4-0 hammering away to City rivals Atletico Madrid in February.

Barcelona, meanwhile, dispatched English side Manchester City rather easily on Wednesday although the 1-0 scoreline doesn’t do the game much justice.

Importantly, Lionel Messi is back to his magnificent best and he alone can wreck havoc on a Madrid defense that has been found wanting far too often since the turn of the year.

The goals have also dried up for Real’s star man Cristiano Ronaldo who’s form has deteriorated dramatically after he picked up his third ballon d’or prize. That and his breakup with his long term model girlfriend Irina Shayk has made the 30-year-old come across as a disgruntled figure in recent weeks as evidenced by his reactions to Gareth Bale’s goals last weekend.

He may have lost a bit of sharpness lately but we all know what Ronaldo can do at his best. He, along with Bale and Benzema, need to step up to give his side a good chance of getting one over their rivals.

Real Madrid can capitalise on Barcelona’s involvement in the Champions League midweek game and the last fifteen minutes could be key for them when fatigue inevitably seeps into Barca’s play.

All things considered, Madrid definitely need the victory more but because Barcelona and Messi are often unstoppable when they get in the mood and with the form they’re in, I just cannot see past a home win come Sunday.
