Diego Maradona
Diego Maradona will go down in World Cup history for moments of sheer brilliance but also for moments of madness and deception. In that famous encounter between England and Argentina in 1986, Maradona jumped to head the ball into the back of the net, but used his hand to help it in when he realised he wouldn’t reach it. He then scored one of the greatest goals in history after dribbling from inside his own half and weaving past the England players at will. 8 years later at the 1994 World Cup in America, the Argentine scored a fantastic goal against Greece, and then celebrated in extremely manic fashion. Maradona’s crazy expressions drew many suspicions and was soon kicked out of the World Cup after failing a drugs test.
Luis Suarez
Luis Suarez has to go down as one of the most fiery players in football, particularly in the World Cup. It’s safe to say that he is one of the most feared strikers on the planet, but he’s also been involved in significant amount of controversies. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Luis Suarez saved the ball with his hands against Ghana in extra time and was shown a straight red card. At the following World Cup in Brazil, Suarez bit Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder for no apparent reason, but the referee didn’t see it and he managed to finish the game. He was later handed a lengthy suspension by FIFA.
