Crewe Alexandra striker Courtney Baker-Richardson is the latest soccer injury in an extremely odd way: Xbox. The 26-year-old forward was home playing video games when he suffered the setback.
“He did it in an innocuous way, which is about right for us with injuries at the moment,” stated Crewe Alexandra coach Alex Morris. “He did it playing on his Xbox. Dropped his leg on the sofa and tweaked it.”
The coach claimed that the strange affliction perhaps compounded a previous leg injury. “It’s an area of his body where he’s had issues before. There’s nothing we can do about it, but he’s having treatment and hopefully it settles down.”
Baker-Richardson is currently the team’s leading scorer with six goals in 10 league games. The injury forced the striker to miss his team’s latest match against Carlisle United last weekend. Crewe Alexandra failed to score in the match, but the game ended 0-0. It does not, however, appear that the talisman will miss an extended period of time.
Crewe Alexandra is currently 12th in the League Two table and have just one victory since mid-August.
Xbox injury newest in list of bizarre soccer injuries
The freak injury is the latest installment of weird ways soccer players have injured themselves. Legendary Irish striker Robbie Keane once reportedly ruptured knee cartilage by reaching for the TV remote.
Versatile Arsenal player Steve Morrow suffered a broken collar bone while celebrating the north London club’s League Cup final win in 1993. The former Northern Ireland international hurt his shoulder after falling off Tony Adams’ shoulders during the celebrations.
Premier League veteran Alan Wright once needed treatment for a nagging knee injury caused by stretching to reach his Ferrari’s gas pedal. The 5’4″ defender eventually sold the Italian sports car for a Rover 416.
Perhaps the most painful freak injury was, however, when Paulo Diogo accidentally ripped off the tip of his finger while celebrating a goal. The midfielder was climbing a barrier when his wedding ring was caught in the fence and the injury occurred. To add insult to injury, he was subsequently booked for the incident.
