Hirving Lozano will continue his career in MLS, just not with San Diego FC. The Mexican forward completed a loan move to direct rivals LA Galaxy, where he’ll look to feel like an important piece again after losing regular playing time in San Diego.
San Diego FC head coach Mikey Varas addressed the departure, making clear the club views the move as the right call for both sides. He described it as a mutual solution rather than a setback: “It doesn’t affect the group at all,” he told Bolavip during a Leagues Cup pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s August 9 clash against Tijuana, adding that the team had operated according to its plan.
Lozano’s brief spell in San Diego produced a season to remember followed by one to forget. The Mexican winger had seen his playing time evaporate entirely in 2026, failing to appear in a single MLS or Leagues Cup match for San Diego FC this season.
That drop-off marks a stark contrast to his 2025 campaign, when Lozano featured in 34 games for the club, scoring 11 goals and adding 8 assists— numbers that made him one of the club’s most productive attacking players in its debut MLS season.
Varas expanded on his stance further, framing the move as a positive outcome for everyone involved. “I’m happy that there’s a solution for the club and for [Lozano]. I’ve always said that he could continue his career,” Varas told Bolavip during Saturday’s Leagues Cup pre-match press conference.

Lozano won’t be gone for long, at least in terms of facing his old club — San Diego FC are set to host LA Galaxy on August 29, setting up a potential return to Snapdragon Stadium for the winger just weeks after his departure.

Bolavip also asked San Diego FC midfielder Alejandro Alvarado for his reaction to Lozano’s departure, and the response was equally warm. “We are happy that he found somewhere he can play and just be himself,” Alvarado said, reflecting on his former teammate’s fresh start with the Galaxy.
Alvarado went on to praise Lozano’s character in the locker room, calling him “always a good teammate” and saying the squad was “excited for him” as he begins this new chapter, sending him their well wishes for the loan spell in Los Angeles.
