“We have communicated to Hirving and his representatives that he will not be part of the sporting plans moving forward,” Heaps said. “That was not a decision that was taken lightly. It was talked through with owners down to leadership, down to myself and Mikey, and communicated to the rest of the group.”



“We really appreciate Hirving’s contributions and what he was able to contribute last year, but as the season went on from style of play — as well as environment — we feel like it’s best for both parties to find a new solution,” the sporting director added.



“We all respect him for the player that he is. Ultimately, it’s just not the right fit, and when it’s not the right fit, it’s no one’s fault,” Varas said. “This is what we think is best for the team, in the short-term and long-term.”



<h2>Why Atlanta United could be a good destination for Lozano</h2>



Just minutes after the end of Hirving Lozano’s time at San Diego FC was confirmed, speculation about a possible move to Atlanta United began to intensify. That timing suggested negotiations for the forward’s transfer may have been underway for quite some time.



“I know Lozano was told he would not continue with the club before last year ended. That’s why the theory that this deal is probably already done makes a lot of sense, and there’s a strong chance we’ll know more in just a few hours,” reporter Daniel Chapela said on Futbol de Primera.



Regarding a potential move to Atlanta United, Chapela added: “That’s where Tata Martino is, who coached him with the Mexico national team. The deal is basically done.” Martino managed <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/mexico/">Mexico</a> from 2019 to 2022, coaching Lozano in 29 matches and including him in squads for the 2021 Gold Cup and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. That prior relationship could prove decisive in finalizing the move.

During the November international break, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/mexico/">Mexico</a> will face two demanding challenges that will help shape their preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Next Tuesday they will face Paraguay, but before that they will meet Uruguay, in a match featuring stars such as Hirving Lozano and Federico Valverde.



Javier Aguirre’s team is coming off a disappointing showing in October, when they lost 4–0 to Colombia and only managed a 1–1 draw against Ecuador. Knowing that South American teams offer a stronger test than what they usually see in Concacaf, Mexico now face another difficult challenge.



<a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/tag/uruguay/">Uruguay</a>, for their part, are also looking to raise their level. Marcelo Bielsa’s team qualified comfortably through Conmebol and now needs to refine their collective play to compete seriously at the World Cup, a title they have not won since 1950.



The match between Mexico and Uruguay will be played this Saturday at 8 PM (ET) at the Nuevo Estadio Corona, located in the city of Torreon, where Santos Laguna usually play in Liga MX. Following the first match, Lozano issued an apology on Instagram, addressing his reaction and expressing regret to fans and teammates. So far in the 2025 season, Lozano has registered nine goals and eight assists in 30 appearances across all competitions for San Diego including MLS and Leagues Cup. His presence in the upcoming playoff games could prove key for the expansion club, not only due to his talent but also considering his high-profile contract, the recently released MLSPA Salary Guide lists the Mexican star with a base salary of $6 million and guaranteed compensation of $7,633,333.

<h2>When does San Diego FC’s 2025 MLS season begin?</h2>



San Diego FC will make its MLS debut against the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park on Sunday, February 23. The team’s home opener at Snapdragon Stadium is scheduled for Saturday, March 1, against St. Louis City SC.



As the newest addition to the league, San Diego FC increases MLS’s total to 30 teams. The 2025 season will feature each team playing 34 regular-season games: 17 at home and 17 on the road. Of those, 28 will be against conference opponents (home-and-away format), while the remaining six will be cross-conference matchups (three at home and three away).

San Diego’s move to target Lozano certainly makes sense for multiple reasons. First of all, the winger is a talented player that should flourish in MLS. He has racked up 30 direct goal involvement in 70 total matches with his national team. Lozano is also a serial winner and has guided all three of his clubs to significant trophies.



Along with his talent on the pitch, the forward will also bring a top Mexican connection to his new team. Downtown San Diego is just 17 miles from the Mexican border. Signing an international star such as Lozano benefits the club in fan interest, both at the arena and on TV.

Current FIFA rules say that if a club’s headquarters are within 31 miles of a country’s border, the team can then recruit 31 miles into the other nation. San Diego FC’s facilities are just less than 30 miles from Mexico. This means that the new MLS team can potentially recruit in Tijuana and the city’s neighboring areas.



<h2>New MLS club only has three players on the current roster</h2>



The pending deal for Lozano adds a significant piece to San Diego’s squad. Team officials have only made three official signings so far. United States U17 goalkeeper Duran Ferree is currently on loan at <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/usl-championship-tv-schedule/">USL Championship</a> side Orange County SC. Midfielder Jeppe Tverskov and forward Marcus Ingvarsten are both <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/denmark-national-team-tv-schedule/">Denmark</a> internationals and play for Nordsjælland. The Danish club shares ownership with San Diego FC.



MLS officials awarded the Californian city as their newest expansion club back in 2023. The new team’s ownership group paid a massive <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/san-diego-poised-for-next-mls-expansion-franchise-20230508-WST-432068.html">$500 million</a> expansion fee to join the North American league. San Diego will soon amp up their roster moves, including hiring a new head coach, as the 2025 season quickly approaches.

New Major League Soccer expansion team San Diego FC is reportedly set to make Hirving "Chucky" Lozano their first ever major signing.

Chucky Lozano is one name that could be making the switch to Major League Soccer. Napoli is shopping the Mexican. Despite playing well and often for the Italian club in recent seasons, he has not grown as rapidly as Victor Osimhen or Kvicha Kvaratskhelia. Lozano snubbed a move to Saudi Arabia to pursue a different challenge. According to one report, that could be Los Angeles Football Club. 



Adam Benlaziz of SportsBlog reports Lozano is considering a move to LAFC. There, he would team up with compatriot Carlos Vela, who has been a star in MLS since coming over in 2018. 



Napoli is hunting for around $15 million in a Lozano sale, which is far less than the $50 million Napoli paid back in 2019. However, since that move, Lozano put out decent numbers with the club. In 155 appearances, Lozano scored 30 goals and assisted a further 17. Moreover, Lozano won trophies in Italy. He won the Scudetto this most recent season while also winning the Coppa Italia in the 2019/20 season.



Lozano has also been an integral player with the Mexican National Team, emerging as one of its bright young stars. Turning 28 later this month, Lozano has logged <a href="https://www.transfermarkt.us/hirving-lozano/nationalmannschaft/spieler/316889" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">64 caps</a>. In those games, he scored 17 goals and assisted 11 times. One of those goals was <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BSeFs40QOI" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a famous winner against Germany</a> in the 2018 World Cup group stage.

Injuries have not been kind to Lozano, though. The Mexican has missed 29 games during his time in Italy due to various injuries. 



<h2>LAFC a sensible option for Lozano in MLS</h2>



Lozano is still a talented player, even if Napoli is willing to eat a net loss on a transfer. However, if he does move on, LAFC would be a good fit for Hirving Lozano.



The Los Angeles club does have an open Designated Player spot, which would allow the club to pay him more. Given his ability, Lozano would likely be a smashing success in the league. Fellow Mexican <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/vela-brace-gives-lafc-bragging-rights-in-el-trafico-thriller-20230416-WST-428706.html">Carlos Vela has thrived</a> in the league. The three-time MLS All-Star won the MVP award in 2019. He capped that off with an MLS Cup in 2022.



Adding Lozano would make LAFC the favorites this year to complete a brace of titles in MLS.
