During the international break, we’re featuring several exclusive interviews on the EPL Talk Podcast. Earlier this week, we released the first part of Detailing The Pyramid featuring interviews with some of the leading experts regarding football tactics. And today we feature an interview with Robbie Earle, the former professional footballer who is now a commentator for ESPN and Portland Timbers.
Earle has a fascinating history. In this interview, he discusses how he fell in love with the game and how he was scouted by Stoke City. Earle describes what it was like to be a footballer in the 70s, cleaning the boots of the professionals and doing odd jobs around Stoke’s Victoria Ground. He discusses how that led to a transfer to Wimbledon where infamous chairman Sam Hamann tried a unique tactic to get Earle to sign for the Crazy Gang.
Earle describes what it was like playing at Wimbledon in those days and the tricks that the players performed to psyche out the opposition. He also described his career at Port Vale where he is still considered a cult hero to this day.
And of course there’s the 1998 World Cup where Earle has the distinction of scoring Jamaica’s first goal ever in a World Cup. Earle discusses his international career as well as his pursuits as a football commentator.
