Gianluigi Donnarumma’s situation at Paris Saint-Germain has been one of the hottest storylines of the 2025 summer transfer window, with his future at the club hanging in the balance. With the UEFA Super Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur on the horizon, the French giants have reportedly disclosed the key reason the Italian star won’t feature in the high-profile clash.

Widely regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers in recent years, Donnarumma has been a cornerstone for Luis Enrique’s PSG, especially last season. In 2024-25, he made 47 appearances, conceded 43 goals, and kept 17 clean sheets. His spectacular saves in the knockout stages proved vital in helping PSG capture their first-ever Champions League title.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Donnarumma will not be renewing his contract with PSG, a decision that led Luis Enrique to drop him for the Super Cup final next Wednesday. The 26-year-old’s current deal runs until June 2026, but with no intention of extending his stay, the club has opted to sideline him.

After also playing a key role in PSG’s run to the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 final, the club had been eager to secure a new deal for their No. 1 before his contract expired. But with negotiations at a standstill, PSG felt they had no choice but to make this bold move.

To address the situation, PSG have already dipped into the transfer market, signing LOSC Lille standout Lucas Chevalier for €40 million. With Donnarumma’s camp feeling the decision is unfair, the keeper now appears set to leave the club , whether that’s in 2025 or when his deal expires in 2026 remains to be seen.

Donnarumma’s next stop could be the Premier League

With Chevalier’s arrival, PSG now have five goalkeepers on the roster, including Matvey Safonov, Arnau Tenas, and Renato Marin. That surplus makes it clear Donnarumma is no longer part of the long-term project, with several destinations rumored, most notably in the Premier League.

According to Fabrice Hawkins, both Manchester United and Chelsea have contacted PSG about Donnarumma’s availability. United have been tracking him since early in the summer, with new manager Ruben Amorim reportedly seeking a replacement for Andre Onana.

Reports suggest Donnarumma is open to joining United as early as this summer. Now, with Chelsea emerging as a serious contender, his future could be decided in the coming weeks, and PSG are said to prefer a sale over losing him for free when his contract expires.
