On Sunday, August 9, Santos hosted Athletico Paranaense at the Vila Belmiro, suffering a costly 2-0 defeat that dropped the club to 17th in the standings, pushing them into the final relegation spot. Neymar missed the clash against third-place Athletico while serving a mandatory one-match ban for yellow card accumulation, marking his second yellow-card suspension of the 2026 campaign.
Following the setback, Santos head coach Cuca addressed the situation publicly, stating he intends to sit down with his superstar. “We are going to talk to Neymar. He is important and cannot miss crucial matches like today’s (Sunday). Our finishing power would certainly have been of higher quality,” Cuca noted during his postmatch press conference.
Santos currently sit 17th in the Table, tied at 22 points with 18th-place Vasco da Gama and 19th-place Remo. Despite the dangerous position, safety remains within reach, as O Peixe sits just one point behind Internacional and Mirassol, who hover above the line with 23 points.

O Peixe will host Ecuadorian side Macara on Thursday before facing a high-stakes relegation battle against Vasco da Gama on Sunday, August 16, when Neymar is expected to return following his suspension.
