Could Luka Modric become Christian Pulisic’s teammate at AC Milan? As the Croatian maestro prepares to close the curtain on his glorious Real Madrid career, speculation is mounting over what could be a fairytale final chapter. Free to choose his next destination, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner is not short of suitors—but Milan may hold the emotional edge in what many are calling “the dream transfer of the summer.”

For now, the move remains a suggestion. A vision. An idea whispered through the halls of Casa Milan. But with the Rossoneri’s new sporting director Igli Tare and head coach Massimiliano Allegri both reportedly enchanted by the idea, and with Modric not chasing a lucrative contract, the dream might be closer to reality than it seems.

Modric’s contract with Real Madrid will officially expire after the Club World Cup, marking the end of a glittering 13-year stay at the Santiago Bernabeu. During that time, the Croatian won 28 major trophies, including six Champions League titles, four LaLiga titles, and two Copa del Reys—making him the most decorated player in Real Madrid history.

“Modric hoped until the very end to renew with Real Madrid, which for him was home and everything: the club has decided to focus on young players and wants to start a new cycle,” explained Relevo journalist Matteo Moretto. The decision, though difficult, signals Madrid’s shift to a new era. For the veteran, however, retirement is not yet on the table.

New challenge beckons

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan has quietly placed Modric near the top of their summer wish list, believing that his leadership, technical skill, and experience could be invaluable in reshaping the team’s identity. Massimiliano Allegri, newly returned to the Rossoneri bench, is looking for veteran anchors to balance Milan’s youthful core. And few carry the gravitas of Luka Modric.

“Luka isn’t chasing a huge deal—he brings class, leadership, and character,” the Italian newspaper emphasized. Milan’s interest is genuine, but Modric is in no rush. According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, “Modric received several approaches from clubs all over the world since leaving Real Madrid, [but is] not in a rush to pick his next club.”

Indeed, the Croatian is focused on finishing his final tournament with Real Madrid before making any decisions. And yet, the Italian giant’s dream continues to simmer beneath the surface.

Emotional pull

So, why Milan? Beyond the sporting merits, there are two deeply personal reasons that might tip the scales in favor of the Rossoneri, Moretto adds. First is family. Modric has made it clear he wants to carefully weigh his next step with those closest to him. “It will be essential for Modric to discuss it with his family when he has to make a decision,” Moretto said. But the second reason runs deeper than soccer.

Luka Modric grew up a fan of AC Milan. As a child, he idolized Zvonimir Boban, the Croatian playmaker who became a legend in red and black. In fact, a photo of young Luka wearing a Milan tracksuit has resurfaced, stirring emotional excitement among fans.

“Modric is a real ‘milanista’. He’s been one since he was little and he had so much passion to come here, but it was never serious. He didn’t want to leave Real after one bad season,” revealed ex-Rossoneri chief Zvonimir Boban. Now, with Los Blancos’ chapter closing, the possibility of Modric fulfilling a boyhood dream suddenly feels tangible.
