Rumors of a possible return for Neymar to Barcelona have been swirling in recent weeks, sparking excitement among fans and media alike. With the Brazilian forward currently back at Santos, his boyhood club, speculation about whether he could make a dramatic comeback to Europe has been growing.

At the heart of the discussion is their sporting director, Deco, who has finally clarified the club’s stance on the matter. While Neymar’s name continues to be linked with the Blaugrana, Deco has provided insight into the club’s thinking regarding their former talisman.

Amid the speculation, the 47-year-old acknowledged Neymar’s brilliance but also pointed out the challenges that come with a potential return. Speaking to the media, he made it clear that the club is not actively considering the possibility at this stage. “I admire Neymar; he is among the best players of the last 10-20 years. He is a phenomenon and still a great player, but his return is not only about the economic aspect,” Deco stated.

While acknowledging the Brazilian’s past achievements at Camp Nou, Deco emphasized that the most important thing for the Brazilian star right now is to rediscover his love for the game. “The most important thing is for Neymar to be happy and enjoy football. I don’t see a better place for him right now than Brazil, especially at his club Santos. I cheer for him and wish him happiness because the Brazilian national team needs him, and everyone who loves football wants to see Neymar happy.”

Neymar of Santos celebrates after scoring the team´s first goal during a match between Santos and Agua Santa as part of Campeonato Paulista 2025 at Urbano Caldeira Stadium (Vila Belmiro) on February 16, 2025 in Santos, Brazil.

Are there any concrete plans for Neymar’s return?

Despite the nostalgia surrounding Neymar’s potential return, Deco insisted that Barcelona does not currently have any concrete plans for next season. The club is still evaluating its squad and considering its future strategy. “At the moment, we do not have clear plans regarding the next season. There are several things that need to be clear. Neymar has always been an important player, but building a football team requires balance and good planning.”

He went on to reflect on the 33-year-old time in La Liga, acknowledging his significant contributions to the club’s success in the past. However, he also hinted that recreating the same magic might not be possible. “Neymar was a phenomenon here, winning titles and achieving a lot, but sometimes stories do not repeat in the same way; however, they might repeat. No one knows.”

Reunion remains unlikely – for now

While some reports suggested that Neymar is eager to return, the former Portuguese player seemed to pour cold water on the idea. He stressed that, for now, neither the Blaugrana nor the Santos star should be thinking about a return.

“At this moment, I don’t think it’s the right time for us to talk about Neymar’s return, and I don’t think Neymar is thinking about that either. I watch football and see him happy, and that is the most important thing for me.”
