Pep Guardiola says Bayern Munich massive injury toll has left his squad in a “critical position.”
Although Bayern have had a relatively easy time with German opposition and currently hold a comfortable ten-point advantage over second place Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga table, they will embark on a trip to Portugal next week to restart their UEFA Champions League campaign against FC Porto.
The reigning German champions only have 14 available players for this weekend’s match versus Eintracht, and their injury list is not expected to ease up prior to Wednesday’s trip to the Estádio do Dragão.
Bayern’s long list of wounded players includes: Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Bastian Schweinsteiger, David Alaba and Javi Martinez; and it was learned this week that defender Mehdi Benatia will be out of action for three to four weeks.
Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s match at the Allianz Arena, Guardiola said the club’s situation is at a “critical” stage but he’s confident the players in his squad will fight until the end.
“Our situation is critical, truly critical, but we’re hanging on in there,” Guardiola said. “We’ll fight until the very end.
“We had problems. Now we have even more problems. We’re a defender down again. It’s such a shame.
“We now have to focus on the players we have. I don’t know how long we can go on like this for.
“We’re tired, but I hope our heads can keep our legs going.”
