FOX News tweets US advances to World Cup knockout round

In a now deleted tweet, FOX News mistakenly claimed that the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup knockout stage. The erroneous tweet also included a link to the ‘story.’ MailOnline, however, was quick to catch the error.

While the USMNT did play very well against powerhouse England, the Americans have not qualified for the knockout phase just yet.

Gregg Berhalter’s side put in an admirable performance on Friday evening in Qatar. Although England had much more possession, the U.S. were arguably the better team.

The USMNT had more total shots and better quality goal-scoring chances as well.

Nevertheless, the game against England ended in a draw. This obviously meant that the USMNT did not qualify for the knockout round. The U.S. currently sit third in the group of four. They are, however, just one point behind Iran for the second spot. The top two teams in each group qualify for the knockout phase.

USMNT face must-win match against Iran

Berhalter’s men can, however, qualify for the next round of the tournament with a win against Iran. The two teams with an interesting political history face off on Tuesday, November 29th.

It is essentially a playoff game for both teams. The U.S. must win the match to move on. However, Iran could actually qualify for the knockout round with a tie.

England currently tops Group B with four points, while Wales sits in the basement with just the sole point.

FOX’s coverage has had issues

The gaffe by FOX has not been the first time that the network has made mistakes during the tournament in Qatar. FS1 came back from their halftime commercial break late during the Denmark vs. Tunisia game earlier in the week. American viewers nearly missed a massive Tunisian goal-scoring opportunity.

FOX’s coverage has also been spotty at times as well. Their live feed went black multiple times during the early stages of the tournament as well.
