Inter Miami is gearing up for a decisive Leagues Cup match that will shape its future in the tournament. On Wednesday, the team will face Pumas UNAM at Chase Stadium in Florida — and they’ll do it without their star, Lionel Messi. Head coach Javier Mascherano addressed the situation and shared insights from a recent conversation he had with the number 10.

Speaking to the media after the team’s morning training session in Fort Lauderdale, Mascherano commented on Messi’s injury: I spoke with him yesterday. The club issued a clear statement: it’s a minor injury. Considering the circumstances, that’s good news. We know how much buzz there always is around Leo when he misses a match.”

Mascherano added that no exact recovery timeline has been set, emphasizing Messi’s unique ability to recover quickly. “He typically bounces back fast. We’ll evaluate things as we go, but he definitely won’t be available for tomorrow’s game. Once he’s ready, he’ll return to action.”

Good news on Falcón’s suspension

Mascherano also addressed the Leagues Cup’s decision to overturn Maximiliano Falcón’s red card, which had been issued in the previous game. “Obviously, it’s good news for us.”

Mascherano on defensive mistakes and player mentality

The coach was also asked about recent defensive errors from the team. He emphasized the commitment of both veterans and young players, not just during games but in training sessions as well. “I have no complaints. Football is a game of successes and mistakes — it’s about constant decision-making.”

Mascherano concluded with a message to his younger players: “What matters most is how you respond to mistakes. You’ll keep making them until your last day as a soccer player — whether it’s your own error or something the opponent forces. What defines you is your reaction.”
