Lionel Messi has been told he won’t receive any special treatment when Inter Miami face Palmeiras in their final group stage match at the Club World Cup. Palmeiras defender Murilo Cerqueira, a vocal Cristiano Ronaldo supporter, made it clear he’s fully focused on stopping the Argentine legend.
The crucial matchup will take place Monday evening at Hard Rock Stadium. Following their surprise 2–1 win over Porto—thanks to a stunning Messi free kick—Inter Miami only need a draw to advance to the knockout rounds. Even a loss could be enough, provided Porto fails to beat Al Ahly.
Despite turning 38 later this month, Messi remains Miami’s main man. He leads the squad in shots, chances created, and successful dribbles. But Murilo is looking forward to the challenge of shutting him down.
When asked if he planned to exchange shirts with Messi, the Brazilian defender was blunt: “I’m not getting into that. A lot of people are already going to ask him for it. I’m focused on marking him—that’s it.”

Murilo didn’t hesitate when reporters asked who he believes is the greatest player of all time: “I’m team Ronaldo,” he said. “He’s a complete player. Even his attitude on the field is something I see as a positive. What really makes him stand out is his discipline. I try to follow that—his routine, his mindset. I really admire him.”
When pressed on whether he would celebrate with Ronaldo’s iconic “siuu” if he scores against Miami, Murilo smiled and responded: “Yes. I’ll do it.”
