Lamine Yamal is set to face Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time in his young career, in what promises to be one of the most anticipated matches of the season. With Spain and Portugal squaring off in the UEFA Nations League Final, the 17-year-old Spanish star addressed the prospect of going head-to-head with the Portuguese icon delivering a confident message.

Both Ronaldo and Yamal played key roles in leading their teams to the final. Ronaldo scored the decisive goal in Portugal’s 2–1 win over Germany, while Yamal bagged a brace in Spain’s thrilling 5–4 victory over France. Now, both players aim to replicate their standout performances in Sunday’s title match.

When asked about the challenge of facing Ronaldo during the post-match press conference, Yamal didn’t hesitate: “Obviously, I have a lot of respect for him—he’s a soccer legend. But I’ll do my job, which is to win, and that’s it.”

Eighteen years ago, when Yamal hadn’t even been born, Ronaldo was already on the rise under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. By then, he had scored over 50 goals and won the 2003–04 FA Cup, the 2005–06 League Cup, and the 2006–07 Premier League. Still, Yamal remains unfazed by the generational gap.

Beyond facing Ronaldo, Yamal reflected on the chance to play in another final with Spain: “It’s a special match, it’s a final with my national team, and that gives me extra motivation. But as I always say, these are the games I want to play in, where I want to show what I’m capable of—so this will be just another final.

We already played the Euro final, which went really well, and hopefully this one goes the same way. It’s another motivation to win one more trophy this year—this time with the national team—and we’ll go all out,” Yamal candidly said.

Will Yamal lift another trophy or will Ronaldo avoid a trophyless season?

Sunday’s showdown between Yamal and Ronaldo will be a clash of generations—one that has already conquered the game, and one just beginning to write his story. In the context of the 2024–25 season, it will be either another trophy for Yamal or the first for Ronaldo.

With FC Barcelona, Yamal swept the domestic scene, winning the Spanish Super Cup, Copa del Rey, and La Liga. Ronaldo, meanwhile, was unable to lift silverware this season with Al Nassr. If Portugal falls short in the Nations League Final, it would mark a rare trophyless campaign for the legendary forward.
