British Soccer Commentator Tony Gubba Dies Aged 69

Tony Gubba, one of the most recognizable voices of British football, died today of a short illness, aged 69.

The Match Of The Day commentator joined BBC Sport in 1972 replacing David Coleman as the presenter of the Sportsnight program. He was also a stand-in presenter on BBC’s Grandstand.

This year was Gubba’s 41st season as a soccer commentator. He had the honor of being the third-longest serving commentator of all time on British television after John Motson and Gerald Sinstadt.

Gubba’s voice was used on classic soccer video games such as the PC version of FIFA International Soccer and the Nintendo 64 game International Superstar Soccer 98.

He also commentated at every World Cup from 1974 to 2006.

RIP Tony Gubba. We’ll miss you.
