Blackpool was stunned this evening with the news that chairman Karl Oyston has resigned with immediate effect just days after their shocking 4-0 victory over Wigan.
No reason has been given as to why but the Daily Mail is reporting that the 43-year-old Oyston, who took control of the club in 1999, resigned because he was unhappy with the £1 million transfer fee Blackpool paid for striker Brett Pitman. Oyston made headlines this summer by enacting a strict budget on manager Ian Holloway. Reports even suggested that Holloway had quit over frustration with his lack of transfer budget. Holloway later refuted those reports and said his relationship with Oyston was “fantastic.”
Oyston was frustrated with business nature of the Premier League. “I expected the landscape to be a lot different,” Oyston told The Guardian. “I’ve been very disappointed in the way that some agents have conducted themselves. I’m not sure I’ve got the right approach for this division and the more I talk to people at other clubs, the more I realise I’m a lone voice.”
Oyston will remain on as acting chief executive until a replacement is found.
