Wigan Athletic Win FA Cup Final After Stunning Victory Against Manchester City

In one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup Final history, Wigan Athletic defeated Manchester City 1-0 today at London’s Wembley Stadium.

With minutes to go before the full-time whistle blew, Wigan substitute Ben Watson came up for a corner kick and brilliantly headed the ball into the back of the net over the arms of City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The turning point in the game for the two teams from Lancashire was the sending off of Pablo Zabaleta in the second half for a second yellow offense when he brought down Callum McManaman. Wigan were unable to score from the resulting free kick from outside the box, but the damage had been done.

McManaman was the man of match in this historic FA Cup Final. The pacy winger constantly troubled the Manchester City defenders. He worked well alongside his fellow Wigan teammates Arouna Kone, Shaun Maloney and Roger Espinoza.

Over the 90 minutes, Wigan were the better team but they have to credit goalkeeper Joel Robles with a spectacular save in the first half when he saved the ball with his foot from a shot by Carlos Tevez.

Congratulations to Wigan Athletic. Naysayers will ridicule the team because they may end up being relegated this season from the Premier League, but there’s no doubt that Wigan deservedly won the trophy today. They gave a triumphant performance on a day that will forever be remembered in the history of Wigan Athletic Football Club.
