Inter Miami are set to face Palmeiras in Matchday 3 of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in a game that could determine their future in the tournament. With qualification for the round of 16 on the line, many fans are wondering why star defender Jordi Alba has been left out of the starting lineup.

The South Florida side enters the matchup against the South American giants riding high after a dramatic comeback win over Porto, capped by a stunning free kick from Lionel Messi to seal a 2-1 victory. That result put Inter Miami in a strong position to advance to the next round of the Club World Cup.

Alba made his return from injury in that game, coming on in the 79th minute to replace Tadeo Allende. Given his star status within the squad, his absence from the starting XI against Palmeiras has sparked plenty of questions from supporters.

Why is Jordi Alba not starting?

Jordi Alba will not start against Palmeiras due to a tactical decision by head coach Javier Mascherano. The Argentine manager has chosen to start Noah Allen at left back, opting for a player with more match rhythm at this stage, given Alba’s recent return to action.

The Spanish veteran recently recovered from a right hamstring injury that sidelined him for nearly a month. Although cleared to play, Mascherano has chosen to manage Alba’s minutes carefully to avoid risking a setback and ensure he remains available for potential later rounds in the Club World Cup.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Alba acknowledged he was ready to contribute, whether starting or off the bench: “I’m fine, whether the coach needs me from the start or off the bench. I’m happy to be back. I think we’re playing very well, and teams aren’t scoring on us that easily.”

As he did against Porto, Alba will be available off the bench and could see more minutes against Palmeiras, adding experience and attacking thrust down the left flank. In the meantime, he’ll have to wait to reclaim his starting spot, with Allen continuing to impress during Alba’s absence.
