Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is relishing the chance to play alongside international team-mate Kevin De Bruyne at club level.

City finally announced on Sunday they had signed Belgium playmaker De Bruyne in a deal believed to be worth around £54million, a new club record.

The club had been linked with the 24-year-old all summer and Kompany, also the Belgium skipper, is convinced he will make a big impact at the Etihad Stadium.

Kompany said: "He is a tremendous talent. He has just got so many assists and goals in him.

"It doesn't really matter how the game goes for him, he is always making decisive plays. Over the course of a season that is ultimately what you pay for – more goals, more assists. He has just got something special."

City have started the season in formidable fashion having won their opening four league matches without conceding a goal. They are already eight points ahead of champions and chief title rivals Chelsea.

But by pressing ahead with a deal for De Bruyne – the fee for which eclipses the previous club record of £49million paid for Raheem Sterling earlier in the summer – City clearly have no intention of easing up.

City's fixture list will start to increase in intensity from next month with the start of the Champions League.

Kompany said: "We have got so many (match-winners) – Samir (Nasri), Raheem (Sterling), Kun (Sergio Aguero), David (Silva), Yaya (Toure) – but it is just that it is a long season and the club is really ambitious. The squad wants to do well."

De Bruyne struggled to make an impact at Chelsea and was sold by the club for just £18million last year, but Kompany does not believe that previous experience will be an issue.

He said: "He has become the best player in Germany and we all know what great players play in the German league. That says enough. You grow up, you mature. It is a completely different style we play."

De Bruyne joins a City squad seemingly rejuvenated and refocused after last season's frustrations.

Kompany said: "The main thing I have seen this season is an extreme amount of focus around the dressing room.

"There is no satisfaction whatsoever out of the first four wins. It is nice for the defenders, the strikers, for the club and the fans – but nothing more than that."
