Sunderland will cross the pond to play preseason matches in the United States this summer. The Championship club is set to play three matches within a 10-day span in July. Sunderland last visited the U.S. in 2015.

The Black Cats will kick off their upcoming summer tour with a match against San Antonio FC on July 15th. They will then head west to face New Mexico United four days later in Albuquerque. Both clubs currently play in the USL Championship. Sunderland will also play one more match before heading back to England. Although an opposing club has not yet been announced, the match is set for July 21st.

San Antonio finished top of the table in the second-tiered division for the 2022 season. New Mexico qualified for the playoffs as well, but were bounced from the competition in the first round.

Sunderland sporting director thrilled with United States preseason

“We are really excited to be taking the team back to the US in the summer of 2023,” said Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman. “It’s been a complex planning process over the past 12 months, as we wanted to ensure we combined a first-class training program with an opportunity to engage with our overseas fanbase.”

“We hope the multi-city approach will allow plenty of supporters to engage with the team and by announcing our plans well in advance, we also hope to see some familiar faces make the trip from the UK.”

Fans will also be able to attend team training

The club also revealed that fans will be allowed the visit training sessions throughout their U.S. stay. Fans can watch the practices and even meet with first-team players during this time.

Ticketing information will also be announced at a later date. However, Sunderland have expressed interest in allowing current season ticket holders the ability to purchase tickets for the tour during an exclusive pre-sale event.
