Barcelona’s summer transfer window is once again being shaped by the club’s ongoing financial limitations, but that hasn’t stopped Hansi Flick from pushing for a surprising acquisition. With three domestic trophies already in the bag and a Champions League semi-final appearance last season, Flick is now focused on adding depth and experience to a young, energetic squad. One of the most intriguing targets? A Champions League-winning veteran with whom Flick shares a successful history.

The Catalans continue to operate under tight financial constraints enforced by La Liga’s salary cap regulations. While Joan Garcia is expected to arrive from Espanyol to bolster the goalkeeping department, many of the other moves this summer are expected to be low-cost or free transfers. Sporting director Deco recently admitted that Barca is targeting “two to four” new players to maintain competitiveness across all competitions.

Among these cost-efficient additions is a free-agent forward whose versatility and championship pedigree make him a valuable asset—especially in a summer where marquee names like Luis Diaz and Rafael Leao are financially out of reach.

Veteran surprise: Flick to reunite with his former star?

The mystery man? Ivan Perisic, the 36-year-old Croatian international and former Bayern Munich winger. Perisic, whose contract with PSV Eindhoven expires at the end of June, is on the verge of signing with Barcelona in what would be a shock move for many, given his age and the club’s recent focus on youth. Yet for Flick, the decision is grounded in logic and familiarity.

“Flick wants players who know his system, and Perisic fits that perfectly,” reported Mundo Deportivo, citing internal club sources.

The two enjoyed immense success together at Bayern Munich during the 2019-20 season, winning the treble, including the Champions League. Flick values Perisic not just for his tactical fit but also for his leadership qualities, physical fitness, and ability to mentor younger players like Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.

Proven record—and a last dance in La Liga?

Despite his age, Perisic is coming off a resurgent season with PSV, where he tallied 16 goals and 11 assists across 35 matches, helping the Dutch club clinch the Eredivisie title. After recovering from a serious ACL injury in 2023, he returned to full fitness and even played a pivotal role in Champions League qualifiers, including scoring against Juventus.

“He maintains top physical condition and contributes positively in the locker room,” said a source close to the Croatian national team. With 144 caps and 36 goals for his country, including a recent strike in a 5-1 win over the Czech Republic in World Cup qualifiers, Perisic has proven he still has something left in the tank.

Now, according Mundo Deportivohe wants to end his career in La Liga, rejecting other offers in favor of Barcelona. His willingness to accept a modest salary aligns perfectly with Barcelona’s financial strategy.
