It’s a good thing that David Moyes wasn’t the manager of Brazil in the 1978 World Cup. When Moyes went into a rage this Saturday after the final whistle blew in the game against Manchester United, he was upset because the referee blew his whistle before Everton had a chance to grab an injury time winner.
But in the 1978 World Cup between Brazil and Sweden, Welsh referee Clive Thomas was the center of controversy when he blew his whistle for full-time after a corner was kicked and the ball went into the net. When he blew his whistle, he turned to face the tunnel and didn’t notice that Brazil had scored from the resulting corner and were celebrating at joy at what they thought was a last minute winner.
