The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have issued a statement confirming striker Diego Costa has left the national team squad due to injury.

The Chelsea player was assessed by the RFEF’s medical staff and it was determined the striker has suffered a level 1 hamstring tear on the biceps femoris of the left thigh, which was previously noted by the Premier League club’s medical staff.

Costa sustained the injury during Chelsea’s 3-2 win at Hull City this weekend, after scoring his twentieth goal of the season. He was replaced by Loic Remy with fifteen minutes remaining in the contest.

The 26-year-old will Spain’s next two games against Ukraine and the Netherlands, and will return to England for treatment.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has called up Malaga’s 21-year-old striker Juanmi as Costa’s replacement.
