Chicharito's future with Real Madrid still unclear

The future of Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez is still unclear despite a fantastic week for Real Madrid.

The on-loan striker from Manchester United scored the decisive goal during the second leg of Real Madrid’s 1-0 Champions quarter-final victory over Atletico Madrid last Wednesday.

Then yesterday, the Mexico international added two more goals against Celta Vigo to help Real Madrid complete a 4-2 win over Celta Vigo, a victory which kept the club two points behind league leading Barcelona on the La Liga table.

Chicharito has only played 18 league games for Madrid this season, with the majority of his appearances coming as a late-game substitute. His total on the year now stands at six goals and two assists.

Prior to this week, the chances of the Mexican staying with Real Madrid next season were slim. However, after a week which has seen the striker play a pivotal role in both domestic and European competition, the talk now is that the club may consider signing the player to a permanent deal.

Real Madrid hold an option to buy Hernandez outright from Manchester United for roughly £14 million, but have been reluctant to exercise it for a player who will likely return to the bench once Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale return from injury.

When asked about his future as a starter and playing for Madrid past this season, Chicharito stressed that he was only focused on enjoying his current run of form.

“Those decisions are for the coach, not me,” Hernandez said. “Right now, I am just enjoying myself. I’m getting opportunities now and I have to make the most of them.

“I’m happy but I’m happier for my family and loved ones more than for myself. For the people who have always had faith in me and told me that my time would come eventually.

“We’re in the Champions League semi-final and in the battle for the league.

“Only God knows were I will be this time next year. For the moment, my only plan is to continue enjoying this moment and helping the best team in the world.”
