For a walk down memory lane, England played Poland in 1973 with The Three Lions just needing a win to qualify for the 1974 World Cup. The match, which was played at the old Wembley Stadium, will live in history because of the brilliant performance by Poland goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski who kept England from winning the crucial match.
Before kick-off, Brian Clough infamously referred to Tomaszewski as “circus clown in gloves.” But it was Tomaszewski who made England look like clowns that night despite the fact that England had a side brimming with talent including Peter Shilton, Emlyn Hughes, Colin Bell, Norman Hunter, Mick Channon, Martin Peters and Martin Chivers.
At half-time in the match, Clough told TV viewers in the United Kingdom, “Keep calm. Put the kettle on, mother. Don’t worry – the goals are going to come.”
