Atletico Madrid Have Agreed To Send Filipe Luis To Chelsea

Chelsea Football Club and Atletico Madrid have announced that they have reached an agreement on the fee for left-back Filipe Luis. The 28-year-old defender will be third member of Diego Simeone’s La Liga winning squad to join Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge next season.

The transfer of Atletico striker Diego Costa was made official earlier this week with the 25-year-old penning a 5-year deal with the London based Premier League club.

The Brazilian forward scored 35 goals last season and was the catalyst for Los Colchoneros title-winning season in the Primera Division, as well as their Champions League run which culminated with the club reaching the final in Lisbon.

And just a few days ago, 22-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois completed his loan deal in Spain and returned to Chelsea.

Last year, for the second consecutive season, Courtois took home the Zamora trophy (awarded by the Spanish newspaper MARCA to the goalkeeper who has the lowest “goals-to-games” ratio) and in 2013 he was named Goalkeeper of the Year at the LFP Awards.

Prior to the World Cup, Jose Mourinho laid to rest any questions of the 6’6” shot stopper extending his stay with Atletico Madrid.

“When the World Cup is over,” Mourinho stated, “Courtois will come straight back to Stamford Bridge – end of story.” And the Portuguese manager has kept to his word.

The loss of Filipe Luis will be a significant one in Madrid as the player was a key figure in Los Rojiblancos defense last season while lining up alongside Diego Godin, Miranda and Juanfran. But the defender will provide insurance at left-back for Chelsea following the departure of Ashley Cole to AS Roma.

The Luis transfer is still subject to a medical and an agreement being reached regarding personal terms between the player and his new club.
