Speaking ahead of his Champions League Round of 16 tie, Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt said his side would have to play on another level to beat the reigning champions of Spain. But was confident his players would be able to execute his game plan tonight at the BayArena.

And so it became true in a closely fought match that Leverkusen won 1-0. At least, in the first leg.

“We have to show everybody that we can cause Atletico trouble,” Schmidt said during his pre-match press conference. “But we will need two perfect days to go through.

“As a home team we have a lot of attacking power and we can create chances, but it won’t be easy against a defensively strong side like Atletico.”

While Atletico Madrid lost the match, they did have a goal that was disallowed after the match officials claimed the ball had gone over the line from a corner kick. As you can see from the above photo, it was the correct decision.

Atletico will get a chance to avenge the result in two weeks from now when the teams play the second leg in Spain.
