USA to face Mexico in CONCACAF Nations League semifinals

Joining Panama and Canada, Mexico and the USA are battling in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals this summer. While it is unfortunate this is not a repeat of the heated final from two summers ago, it at least guarantees another competitive fixture between the two rivals. The USA vs Mexico game in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals is June 15.

The CONCACAF Nations League Finals are in Las Vegas, the same location as 2021’s Gold Cup Final between Mexico and the United States. That game, as well as the previous Nations League Final in 2021 in Denver, proved tight. Both needed an extra 30 minutes to settle a winner. However, the United States emerged victorious both times.

The USMNT game against Mexico is on the same day as the other Nations League semifinal. Panama, which topped Costa Rica on Tuesday night, plays against Canada. Panama’s surprising result sets up a match involving two teams making their debuts in the CONCACAF Nations League Finals. In 2021, Honduras and Costa Rica lost in the semifinals. However, one of Panama and Canada will play for the CONCACAF Nations League title.

The seeding for this game is not based off a draw. Instead, the semifinal matchups are based on group stage performance. The top performing team in the group stage, the United States, is playing against the lowest performing team, Mexico. The USA picked up three wins and a draw in its four games. Mexico had two wins and two draws. Panama also had three wins and a draw, but the United States had a vastly superior goal differential of +12 over four games.

Paramount+ is the home of the other Nations League games, as well as CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying. There is a chance the game could also air on CBS’s channels, such as how the 2021 Nations League Final aired on CBS Sports Network. However, as of late March, there is no confirmation on the status of this game on TV.

The semifinals games, including this US-Mexico fixture, is on Thursday, June 15. Then, the Final and consolation game are on Sunday, June 18.

Why are there so few US goalkeepers who are good with their feet?

Why are there so few US goalkeepers who are good with their feet?

It wasn't that long ago that US goalkeepers were a common sight in the Premier League, playing first-team soccer week after week. Goalkeeper Brad Friedel made 450 Premier League appearances across several clubs including Liverpool, Tottenham, and Aston Villa. Tim Howard made 399 appearances in the Premier League, which included his time at Manchester United […]

30 years of MLS: Why it’s time for the excuses to stop

If I had a nickel for every time I heard an American make an excuse for MLS by saying “Well, the league isn’t as old as other leagues,” I’d be a rich man. Launched in 1996, Major League Soccer is celebrating its 30th season this year. In that time, the league has grown to become […]
