Brazil’s national team is set to welcome back one of its greatest stars. Neymar has officially been called up for Brazil’s upcoming CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina. After an extended period away due to a serious knee injury, his return is expected to be a crucial boost for the Seleção. However, one question lingers—will he reclaim his iconic shirt number?

The Brazilian number 10 jersey is one of the most revered in soccer history. With Neymar’s absence, other players have stepped in to wear the famous shirt. But with the Santos forward now back in the squad, the debate over whether he will reclaim his number is finally settled.

Neymar last played for Brazil in October 2023, when he suffered a devastating ACL and meniscus injury during a World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay. His recovery took nearly 17 months, during which the national team underwent changes, including a managerial switch with Dorival Junior now at the helm.

Despite questions about his fitness, the 33-year-old has made a strong impression since returning to Santos. In just seven matches, he has scored three goals, including a stunning Olimpico goal, and provided two assists. His performances convinced Dorival that Brazil could not afford to ignore a player of his caliber.

Neymar of Santos celebrates the second goal of his team scored by Tiquinho Soares during a Campeonato Paulista 2025 match between Santos and Noroeste at Urbano Caldeira Stadium (Vila Belmiro) on February 19, 2025 in Santos, Brazil.

The Canarinho will first host Colombia in Brasília on March 20, before heading to Buenos Aires for a high-stakes clash against Argentina. These matches are vital, with Brazil currently sitting fifth in the CONMEBOL qualifying table with 18 points, behind leaders Argentina (25 points) and fourth-place Colombia (19 points).

Legacy of Brazil’s number 10 kit

Brazil’s number 10 shirt is more than just a number—it represents a lineage of legends. Pele, Zico, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and Kaka all donned the shirt before Neymar, who first wore it in June 2013. Just a month later, he led the nation to victory in the Confederations Cup, dismantling then-World Cup champions Spain in the final.

Neymar carried the number 10 through three World Cups, becoming Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals and their second-most capped player ever. His influence on the national team remains undeniable.

Who sported the number 10 jersey in Neymar’s absence?

During Neymar’s injury layoff, the number 10 was passed around. Rodrygo wore it in the Copa America after personally receiving Neymar’s blessing. However, his performances did not match expectations, and in the most recent international break, Raphinha took over the shirt, even scoring while wearing it and paying tribute to Neymar with his signature celebration.

Now, with the Santos captain back, the matter is reportedly settled—Raphinha will step aside, and Brazil’s number 10 will return to its rightful owner.
