Legendary Dutch player and coach Johan Cruyff has never been one to shy away from sharing his opinion.
In an article published in De Telegraf, the former Barcelona manager criticized Real Madrid for their recent run of form in La Liga.
The Spanish press is doing its best to blame the club’s most recent failures on current Real Madrid boss, Carlo Ancelotti.
Others have pointed a critical finger at president Florentino Perez, whose blueprint for running the club has seen the 68-year-old spend $1.3 billion on transfers during his twelve years (two terms) in charge with a return of three league titles and two European Cups.
In his article published in De Telegraf, Cruyff pointed to the past seven season in which the Spanish giants have only won one league title. The footballing legend said that just isn’t good enough for a club with the financial power and global reach of Real Madrid.
“It’s ridiculous that [Real Madrid] have only won the league once in seven years,” Cruyff said. “Losing the title race once isn’t a problem, but doing so for so many seasons in unacceptable.”
“I had doubts whether any Real Madrid player actually wanted their teammate to score in recent games. That’s the difference between them and Barcelona, where everybody pulls together to score goals.”
Cruyff, who won the European Cup with Barcelona in 1992, went on to share his thoughts on the upcoming Champions League final between Barca and Juventus.
“Spanish and Italian football have been a cut above the rest [in this season’s competition],” Cruyff added.
“The Premier League has been disappointing. It’s been proven once again that it isn’t at all about money. I say that about both Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, who had a lot more money to spend than Juventus.
“I have the utmost respect for Juventus. They were in Serie B not so long ago, but they came back strong.”
