Germany director Oliver Bierhoff resigns after World Cup

Germany soccer federation technical director Oliver Bierhoff has resigned of his role on Monday. Bierhoff, who has been with the German DFB since 2004, had his contract terminated because of the country’s lackluster display at back-to-back World Cups.

“I’ve told German FA president Bernd Neuendorf of my decision today. I’m clearing the path for setting a new course,” said Bierhoff.

“We didn’t manage to repeat previous successes and to give supporters reason to cheer in the last four years. Some decisions we had been convinced of turned out wrong. No one regrets that more than me. I take responsibility for that.”

The Germans disappoint yet again

Germany failed to reach the knockout rounds in each of the last two World Cup tournaments. The Germans finished third in Group E of the current competition in Qatar. Japan and Spain both qualified for the knockout round ahead of Germany.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf praised the outgoing technical director following the announcement of his departure. “Oliver Bierhoff has been of incredible service to the DFB,” stated Neuendorf. “Even though we have fallen short of expectations on the pitch in recent tournaments, he has been behind big moments.”

“His work will forever be intertwined with our World Cup triumph in Brazil. Even in turbulent times, he always followed his goals and visions and has helped shape the DFB in a sustainable manner. I want to thank Oliver Bierhoff on behalf of all the staff at the DFB for everything he has done for us and football in Germany.”

Oliver Bierhoff not only change possible for Germany

The Germans previously lifted the 2014 World Cup trophy in Brazil. It was their fourth triumph in the competition since 1954. Nevertheless, two extremely disappointing displays have shaken up the usually formidable team.

As Bierhoff exits, much of the attention will now turn to head coach Hansi Flick. It could be difficult for Flick to remain in his current position with the squad, but any final decision will most likely not be made until a new technical director is hired.
