Mohamed Salah makes final decision on Liverpool’s future amid Saudi Pro League links: What about Virgil van Dijk’s plans?

Mohamed Salah has made a definitive choice regarding his Liverpool future, casting aside speculation and intensifying links to Saudi Arabia. As Liverpool navigated a delicate transition period under new management, the Egyptians’ decision couldn’t have come at a more vital time. But while Salah’s path seems clear now, the same question looms over another Anfield legend—Virgil van Dijk.

At a time when change is sweeping through Anfield—most notably with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s expected move to Real Madrid—Liverpool are quietly making moves to retain their core. The duo are now on the verge of signing new contracts, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

“Liverpool maintain their confidence that both Salah and Van Dijk will stay and sign new deals. The club absolutely want to get it done ASAP, as Trent is getting closer and closer to Real Madrid,” Romano told GiveMeSport.

Slotting these two deals into place would provide manager Arne Slot with the kind of leadership and pedigree needed to lay the foundation for his reign. Salah and Van Dijk are more than just star players—they are the heartbeat of a squad that has consistently competed at the highest level. Their continued presence is a symbolic and tactical necessity.

Salah says ‘yes’ to Liverpool

The speculation around Salah has lingered for months, especially with Saudi Pro League clubs circling, offering eye-watering wages and the allure of a new challenge. But Salah’s decision, according to The Times, is now made: he will sign a new contract and remain at Anfield. “Mohamed Salah is closing in on an agreement with Liverpool to extend his contract and remain at Anfield,” reported The Times.

This marks a significant turning point. Back in November, Salah admitted he was “probably more out than in” at Liverpool after contract talks stalled. But now, the 32-year-old—on a reported $447,000-a-week base salary—is ready to commit once more. With 27 goals in 31 appearances this season and 54 goal involvements in total, there’s little doubt that Liverpool is locking down one of the world’s most impactful forwards.

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool celebrates scoring his team's third goal during the Premier League match between Liverpool FC and Southampton FC at Anfield on March 08, 2025 in Liverpool, England.

Salah’s decision doesn’t just secure a superstar—it sends a message. It shows that, despite the pull of mega-money leagues and managerial upheaval, the Reds remain a destination for the very best.

Van Dijk to follow?

If Salah’s renewal is the first domino, Virgil van Dijk’s appears to be falling next. The Dutch defender, now 33, has also been in discussions with the club. Speaking recently after a match, Van Dijk offered a rare update. “Progress has been made” in securing his future, he told The Times, signaling that a new deal is within reach.

Virgil Van Dijk

Van Dijk’s importance can’t be overstated. Liverpool have conceded only 30 goals in the Premier League this season, with Van Dijk’s calming presence and physical dominance at the back a major reason why they sit 11 points clear of Arsenal with seven games to play.

For Arne Slot, keeping the Dutchman is about more than defence—it’s about identity. It’s about anchoring the team with a captain who commands the respect of the dressing room.
